Even for me, returning to America can be a bit of a culture shock. On my latest trip to the States, I was amazed by the food there. For example, when I went to restaurants, the portions seemed double or triple the size of the portions in Japanese restaurants. And, everything seemed to be covered in cheese or full of salt and fat. Just for fun, my daughter and I went to McDonalds and got the “supersize” menu. The French fries and cola were so large that the two of us couldn’t finish one supersize meal. When we ate at home, I was able to enjoy all the foods I used to love so much, even though I knew they contained a lot of fat and salt. And, of course, with every meal we ate a dessert of pie, cake, cookies or ice cream. Everything tasted wonderful and I very much enjoyed eating the foods I remember from my youth, but by the end of the short trip, I had gained 2.5 kg. What a shock! So even though I love American food, I have really come to prefer the healthy Japanese diet.
