I think I was fortunate to grow up at a time in America when there were still many small farms and vibrant farming communities. Unfortunately, the ‘country’ way of life is disappearing. The number of farmers has decreased from 12.2% of the population in 1950, to only 2.2% in 2007. With this decrease has come a concurrent change to American society as it moved from a rural to urban orientation. Some of these changes have been good, but I can’t help but be a bit nostalgic for the life on the farm and the close-knit farming communities I knew in my youth. I also miss the slower-paced, quiet, peaceful life surrounded by nature. Such a life isn’t meant for everyone, but for me, watching the sunset and sunrise over the fields, walking through woods, hearing the birds, being around animals, and watching hundreds of lightening bugs at night is the best way to relax I know.
