Reading History Helps to Understand the Present

One of my hobbies is reading history. I especially enjoy reading about America’s Civil War, and one of my favorite Civil War writers is Shelby Foote. I’ve just finished reading his narrative of the war. His writing makes the war clear and easy to understand and the way he tells the story captures the tragedy and drama of the war. As one of the defining events of American history, understanding the Civil War, its causes and its consequences, is essential to understanding America today. Even now the questions that were important factors in the war, especially the question of whether power should be concentrated in the states or in the federal government, continue to be important in today’s political environment. For anyone interested in a deeper understanding of the Civil War, therefore, a better understanding of current political issues in America, I strongly recommend Mr. Foote’s books*1.

*1: The Civil War, by Shelby Foote was first published in 1958
