HOMESTAY IN SEATTLE

Spending time in the United States is a great way to gain firsthand knowledge of American culture and American English. Bunka Women’s University offers a short homestay program that is done in conjunction with Bellevue College in Seattle, Washington. In 2010, the program will run from August 27 to September 14.

The main feature of this program is the homestay experience. Each student stays with a host family for the duration of the program. The host families represent a diverse range of cultures and nationalities, reflecting the multi-ethnicity of Seattle.

Staying with a host family ensures that students are consistently exposed to
various aspects of living in the United States. Students are treated as real members of the family, and participate in all of the usual activities that the family engages in.
These include going to school games, neighborhood barbecues, church events and family birthdays.

On weekdays, the Bunka students participate in activities and classes at Bellevue College. Last year the classes that were offered included “Survival English”, “Teaching Japanese”, “Etiquette and Manners”, and “Card Making”.

There are also several off campus activities. One of these is an all day tour of downtown Seattle including a stop at the original Starbucks.

One of the most popular outings is the high school visit where the Bunka students share their knowledge of Japanese language and culture with American high school students.

Of course, a stay in Seattle is not complete without a trip to see Ichiro in his Number 51 uniform. The Bunka ladies seem to enjoy shopping as much as watching baseball at Safeco Field!

On the last day at Bellevue College, a graduation party is held on campus to mark the end of the program. Many of the host families also attend this event. It is a time to share memories and to thank the host families for their kindness and hospitality.

Most students say that participating in the Seattle Homestay Program was one of the highlights of their academic career at Bunka Women’s University. As an English language instructor, I highly recommend this program as a way of experiencing everyday life in the United States!
