What a hot summer! I hope everyone had a chance to relax and enjoy the break, despite the heat. As for my family and me, we spent a couple days in the ‘countryside’ of Yamanashi, visiting an onsen and enjoying a beautiful view of Mt. Fuji from our hillside hotel.
I always enjoy a chance to get outside of Tokyo and see the countryside, although, where I grew up in America, even the countryside of Yamanashi seems like the city to me. As a small boy, I lived on a farm. The closest ‘town’ was 5 kilometers away and this town had only 50 people. Our house was so far in the countryside that it wasn’t even necessary to close the curtains at night since the closest neighbor lived more than a kilometer from us. I grew up spending my summers working on the farm, taking care of the animals, riding horses and going swimming in the nearby stone quarry. Now, after all these years living in the city, I think I’d really miss the convenience of city life and the many interesting things to do there, but I still love the countryside and a quiet life surrounded by good people, nature and animals. So the saying must be true, “You can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy.”
