Spring is almost here! It’s time to dust off my bicycle and get ready to explore Japan. There is little that I enjoy more than escaping the city and getting into the nearby countryside and mountains. The longer I live here, the more bike trails and long rides I have been able to find. I’ve discovered that even Mt. Fuji is within a day’s ride. I’m often surprised by things I find on these rides, such as thatched roof houses, picturesque mountain villages, and scenic mountains, lakes and valleys. This spring, I hope to do more exploring of Yamanashi and if all goes well, this summer, I plan to ride coast to coast (from Tokyo to Joetsu) and then tour the Noto peninsula, or perhaps Sado Island. Both areas are well-known among bikers for their beauty and for their relative lack of traffic. Besides keeping me in good health, exploring Japan by bicycle gives me a chance to get to know this beautiful country much better than I could possibly do by train or car.
